ArtLot: 4pm Tuesday, December 27 ... 3pm Sunday January 1

Playwright Susannah Finzi talks about an unusual comedy double she is producing in Gloucester on January 6, in this week's Art Lot Slot.

And I must confess an interest here ... I am co-producing it with her!

‘Unusual’ as it very much explores the playwright’s craft: Susannah's play, called 'Cuts', is a performed reading with a Q&A session afterwards. Its theme is the Government's financial cutbacks in this recession-mad world.

And my play actually invites the audience to be playwright: I've written the skeleton of it which will be acted out by three actors, and about 10 minutes into the play the action will stop and we will invite the audience to say what-next.

Called Take Me to Paradise, it's a comedy about parental assumptions in an only-child suburban family. On the night, anything, literally anything and everything, could happen next ... the audience is in the writer's seat!

But ... but ... but! This Art Lot is more than just a bare-faced plug for January 6 -- Susannah talks about her fascination with the often unnoticed power-behind-the throne in so many world-changing events, and how this fascination led her into script writing.

However ... however ... however! Now does come a bare-faced plug for January 6: the evening is called 'Two Writers, Two Comedies and You!'

It's at the wonderful King's Theatre, in Kings Barton Street, in Gloucester, at 7.30 on January 6. Tickets in advance are only £5 and can be had by phoning me, Swithin Fry, on (01452) 813274; or e-mailing me on swithinfry@gmail.com. On the door, tickets are £6.50 ... all concessions £5.

I've attached a short, two-minute audio-promo to help you make up your mind! You can see that Susannah and I a very unusual, very exciting, theatrical evening ... really not to be missed!

ArtLot: 4pm Tuesday, November 29 ... 3pm Sunday December 4

The somewhat controversial David Elkington is James D'Angelo's guest this week. At the heart of the discovery of tablets that could revolutionise the history of Christianity, the Art Lot is David's first public platform for his revealing what is contained within these tablets. What a scoop!

David is known for his epic journey in the early 1980s travelling throughout Europe and the Middle East, on foot, to help with an understanding and appreciation of the beliefs of early Christians and their relationships with particular ‘sacred’ sites.

This revealed shared acoustical properties of ancient sites in the west of Ireland and subsequently worldwide. In 1998-2004, he co-hosted academic tours of the major ancient sites of Egypt as a member of the Egypt Exploration Society and the Palestine Exploration Fund.

For a man who has appeared on Channel 4, BBC Television and BBC Radio, this really is an Art Lot scoop!

Tuesday

4pm Tuesday November 1 and 3pm Sunday November 6

Art Lot co-presenter James D’Angelo’s special guest is Yehuda Tagar…here’s the low-down on Yehuda:

‘Yehuda is an Australian/South African psychotherapist and consultant and the founder of a modality called Psychophonetics, which he created out of his work in experiential theatre in 1991 in Australia. His background is in social work, theatre and Anthroposophy. He is the principal of Persephone Institute and Persephone College, which is based in Stroud.

‘Psychophonetics is a modality of coaching for deep transformation, psychotherapy and healing based on Rudolf Steiner's Psychosophy.

‘As the word Psycho (soul) phonetics (sounds) already says, the work with sounds is fundamental to this work. Through the use of gesture and sounds memories that have been stored in the life body can be brought into awareness, which enables the client to re-cognise previous experience and give it new meaning.’

Wow! What will his musical choices be!

4pm Tuesday October 18 and 3pm Sunday October 23

If you want to hear a young musician who's really going places, then tune in to The Art Lot this afternoon ... because my guest, contemporary folk musician and singer Gill Sandell, is certainly heading for the tops.

Gill is accompanied by Art Lot-veteran (not a reference to her age!) violinist Anna Jenkins.

They brought their instruments into the studio and play several tracks from Gill's debut album Tarry Awhile. It's brilliant!

Gill has a new single coming out, and she and Anna play the top-side of that ... Gill has a unique sound ... so tune in and listen!

Anna, who was one of my first guests on the show with her musical partner Johnny Barlow, tells how her musical career has progressed since coming on The Art Lot nearly three years ago.

They both talk about how music became so prominent in their lives ... and there's a little bit of advice for young people with a passion for music ... so tune in and listen!

Both Gill and Anna are the supporting act for an ambitious tour with Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo (who have recently provided the title music for the BBC2 Drama series 'The Shadow Line'). If you didn't catch them in Stroud recently, here are the future dates in October:

Sun 16th- The Jericho, Oxford             01865 311 775
Weds 19th- Phoenix Arts, Exeter             01392 667 080
Thurs 20th- Fibbers, York             08444 771 000
Fri 21st- Guildhall, Gloucester             01452 503 050
Sat 22nd- Leadmill, Sheffield             01142 212 828

Gill also sent me extracts some reviews. Look at these : "I am smitten by her beautiful music." For Folk's Sake
"... breathlessly pretty voice." R2*** (Rock n Reel)
"A sweet and
tender album, a rare beauty.” Northern Sky

So don't miss this fabulous interview.

RED DOG AUTUMN TOUR 2011

“There are eight years of mourning ahead of us. While it lasts not even the wind will get into this house”.

But nothing can stop the
growing tide of desire of Bernada Alba's five daughters. As the frustrated tension mounts, each holds on to their longings, jealousies and hopes for the attentions of the virile Pepe Romano, promised in marriage to one of them.

Following their successful tour and
London run of Naomi Wallace's One Flea Spare, Red Dog now brings Federico Garcia Lorca's final masterpiece 'The House of Bernarda Alba' to the stage in a new adaption by Kate Littlewood. In the 75th anniversary year of Lorca's death this is a stunning theatrical journey into the imagination of a great poetic writer, a theatre giant at the height of his powers.

This production is touring until December.

Monday

TODAY! at 7.30 PM…but pre-register NOW!

Author and Art Lot guest Catherine G Lucas is having an unusual book launch today…on the web – which means that anyone anywhere in the world can attend.
Catherine’s timed the launch for today’s World Mental Health Day…her book, In Case of Spiritual Emergency, looks at mental health issues from a ‘spiritual’ rather than a strictly medical point of view.

Apart from case histories of people who have been through spiritual crisis, her book gives a toolkit and lists resources for coping with mental crisis.

To ‘attend’ her book launch, during which she interviews three people prominent in the world of spiritual emergency, go to www.Academywisdom.co.uk where you can pre-register and then join in tonight.

4pm Tuesday October 18 and 3pm Sunday October 23

My next Art Lot guest is a contemporary folk musician and singer Gill Sandell ... she's coming into the studio with violinist Anna Jenkins, who was one of the first guests on the show with her musical partner Johnny Barlow.

They are both bringing in instruments ... so it should be a lively and musical event!

Gill has a new single coming out ... I'm looking forward to playing it -- it's really great.

Gill released her debut solo album 'Tarry Awhile' in November 2010. For the last few years she has been the accordionist and flautist with Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo (who have recently provided the title music for the BBC2 Drama series 'The Shadow Line'), and has featured on all three of their albums.

Look at these reviews: "I am smitten by her beautiful music." For Folk's Sake
"... breathlessly pretty voice." R2*** (Rock n Reel)

So don't miss tuning in to what could be a fabulous interview.

Thursday

Three-in-one!

I'm treating myself to a retirement gift ... a month in India!

Yes, I'm off for the whole of September BUT OF COURSE the Art Lot will still be broadcast ... Ah, the wonders of pre-recording!

So, there are three programmes to tell you about, the first being the repeat this Sunday of the wonderful interview with illustrator Tony Meeuwissen ...

…repeated Sunday, August 28 at 3 PM
Tony has enjoyed a prolific and prestigious career, and although you may not recognise his name, but I would put money on it that you recognise his work.
He has designed record labels, award-winning stamps, award-winning books and covers of the Radio Times ... and in the interview he tells how his career started and developed.
Definitely, definitely, definitely ... a must-listen show.
Tuesday, Sep 6 at 4pm…repeated Sunday, Sep 11 at 3 PM

If you were as flabbergasted as I was, at the glitches which bedevilled the interview with music-man Michael Deason-Barrow, then you will be delighted to know that Art Lot co-presenter James D’Angelo has persuaded him back into the studio to re-record the session, and this is the week it is broadcast.

Michael, director of Tonalis, is not only a master singing teacher and an inspirational choir trainer, he is also known all over the world as a music innovator promoting a new vision of music.

This show is a fabulous conversation between two music masters: don’t miss it!

Storyteller Fiona Eadie is my guest this week. If you thought storytelling was only for children, think again.

Not only does Fiona share the delightful tale about how she came into the craft of storytelling, but I also managed to persuade her to tell ‘us’ story during the show.

Which she does, and nearly has me in tears! It's a beautiful, traditional story which she tells the true story of the pathos and passion.

Do listen in! You will not be disappointed!

Art Lot fan Bill Jones has sent me keen this update of the next short story night on Sunday, 16th October, and he's looking for submissions.

Stories can be between 50 and 1500 words long.  All subjects and genres welcome, he says, true as well as fictional. The deadline for submissions is Sunday 18th September.

You can send your stories (preferably in the body of an e-mail) to:

He’s also made a website with photos from the last event and information about forthcoming events at http://www.stroudshortstories.blogspot.com/ .

Michael Deason-Barrow interview

Well, I thought I had it sorted and I didn't ... those wretched technical gremlins crept into Sunday's broadcast as well.

But here's the promise -- it will be sorted and it will be broadcast hopefully in September.

So, a very special apology to you all and especially of course to music-man Michael Deason-Barrow ...
