The Everyman Series

I have three fabulous sessions coming up for all theatre lovers: I'm calling them The Everyman Sessions because they focus on the Autumn Plays coming up at Cheltenham's Everyman Studio Theatre in early October.

The Everyman has a thriving Writers Lab of some 20 playwrights; and each October for a week the Studio Theatre is given over to producing plays written by them.

The plays are performed script-in-hand. The actors and director get together each morning to work on one chosen play. Costume and design are also involved...and then, in the evening, the play is performed with the actors dressed for the part though having a script in the hands.

The first Art Lot of The Everyman Series, on Tuesday, September 7 at four, features playwrights Miranda Walker and Richard Robey [pictured here] who both had plays performed in last year's series. They talk about how their interest in playwriting started, the thrill of having work performed, and give some personal tips for newcomers to writing.

This will be repeated on Sunday, September 12 at three.

The guests in the following Art Lot, on Tuesday, September 21 at four, are playwright Martin Lytton and actor Gregor Hunt.

Martin wrote the thought-provokingly controversial play Lazarus which was selected not only for the Writers Lab plays last year but also developed by director Paul Milton for full performance. It subsequently ran to packed houses for four nights in the Studio Theatre earlier this year.

Martin talks about his process in writing a play which gives some fascinating insights into the playwright's mind.

Gregor is the actor who played Lazarus in all the productions. In this interview, he explores the issues raised by the play and talks about what it's like for actor to play disturbed and disturbing characters.

This will be repeated at 3 PM on Sunday, September 26.

These interviews have already been recorded as I'm off to catch some late sun in Italy for a couple of weeks. But I'll be back in time for the final Everyman Series when I plan to interview the four directors who will actually be producing this year's Autumn Plays.

Four directors each tackling one play: it's going to be a real put-it-in-the-diary week! I shall be asking them what attracted them to the play; and to say what they feel makes that particular play a ‘don't miss’ event.
This will go out on Tuesday, October 5 at four, all ready for the start of the plays the following week beginning October 11. This is repeated on Sunday, October 10 at three.
